The term “Digital Marketing” originated in the year 1990. Although there was the presence of Web 1.0, which is static and personal websites, it didn’t necessarily allow the audience or the marketers to share intimate information online. This was because of the lack of advancement of the internet in that day and age. Regardless, users could still look for important items on the web that they wished to purchase.
This was the time period when clickable online ads were generated and brought into action. This was a significant change in the digital marketing community as it allowed the platform to show pop-up ads to customers surfing through the internet.
The world welcomed its biggest search engine of that time; Yahoo! Not long after Yahoo! had made its debut, it had already received a huge number of users. This search engine shook up the digital marketing industry, giving them better opportunities to advertise and optimize themselves to attract bigger crowds. E-commerce transaction was also performed for the first time in this year.
Following the launch of Yahoo!, some other search engines and tools like HotBot and LookSmart were founded. HotBot was powered by HotWired while LookSmart was an Australian invention. HotBot was a search engine tool that was responsible for showing search results, while LookSmart was a search engine and ad-network.
The internet launched its first ever social media site; SixDegrees.com. This site enabled the audience to make profiles online and connect with other users. Although, it only lasted until 2001.
This is a year of great significance for the entire world, thanks to the introduction of Google. Google is the best and leading search engine in our current generation and has also left a deep, positive impact on the digital marketing field. But Google wasn’t available for the general public at that time.In 1998, two other major things were also discovered, i.e., MSN by Microsoft and Yahoo Web Search powered by Yahoo!.

The modern day’s widest music streaming app, Spotify, was brought into existence in 2008.
2009 is a remarkable year in the history of progress of digital marketing. Google introduced real-time results from the search engine. It also announced a number of products that boosted its reputation among the users of the digital markets; these products were – AdSense and AdWords. Google’s profit schemes were based on advertising on the internet according to the audience’s preferences. AdSense is a pay-per-click plan while AdWords are ads consisting of 3 lines either on the top or the bottom of a search engine.
Another social media platform that promoted online interactions with friends and family, WhatsApp, was introduced. Google Buzz, a micro-blogging networking site, was founded.

Facebook took ownership of WhatsApp and Instagram. Online cookies were developed. Snapchat came into existence. Search engines launched smoother tools for websites to rank better in search results. Social Media Marketing witnessed a drastic growth in the years following. But, the evolution doesn’t stop here.
