How was Social Media 10 years Back?

How was social media 10 years back.? The rise of smartphones alleviated the way people interacted with each other and gradually these technologies have now become a ubiquitous part of our life. It is fascinating to regard the way social media landscape has changed since its inception. So in this blog, we are going to travel back in time and take sneak peek about how was social media 10 years back.

By 2010, social media was evolving at an unbelievable rate and brought sweeping changes to the world in many facets. Our few popular social media went through major transformations during this phase and that’s what forms the crux of today’s version!

Facebook

On the onset of 2010, Facebook pioneered itself as the next revolution in the social media world following the MySpace era. The network which formerly targeted young generation reached millions of users in a very short span of time. Also, some major changes in designs took place since its launch in 2004. The better visual version swept away the world and we got introduced to our very beloved the ‘like’ button, which went on to become the icon of social media communication.

Instagram

The rage of social media was at peak during 2010 as we saw another milestone in the form of Instagram. Launched in 2010, Instagram initiated a focus on curation rather than conversation. The concept caught on-trend and photography was never same again. This app for sharing photos and small videos skyrocketed with 15 million users at that time. The layout of the app was very simple with basic photo feed, user name and description. You could like, comment and share them just like Facebook but it was more focused on the art of photography and style than the talks.

Pinterest

Pinterest had a similar concept as that of Instagram but the purpose was unique. You could save and store the links of the websites that intrigued your interest and then refer them for future use. The platform harboured creativity and then suddenly every Event was inspired by Pinterest boards rather than magazines.

In the initial days, it was through a request in the form of an invite to join any community or creator as it was still in beta phase. The outlook of this app was quite elemental like a picture blog. You could add photos, tag posts or create a whole new styled or inspirational board. You could also share the content you liked with other users and organize them into categories according to the nature or topic.

Twitter

Twitter was conceived in 2008, but “New Twitter” was unveiled in late 2010 as it launched its first major redesigned version. The core value was intact just the layout was visually busy. One side there was a timeline and on the other details your tweets. With the updated version you could then share your photos and videos on the platform.

LinkedIn

Lofted in 2003, this was a premium member site. By the end of 2010, it became a free networking platform honoured as a social network of professionals. The initial design consisted of a search bar and search result feed. With the help of the search tool you could learn about topics in the industry you were interested in and to refine your search list it had in-built filters on the left pane and right pane displayed the content in trend.

If you look closely, it was much simpler then as it was germinating. It wasn’t a marketing tool as it is now. There were no ads scattered in the nooks and corners, there weren’t any influencers. We used to poke our friends on Facebook and filters were just used in photoshop. Back then it was only used to keep your people close and stay up to date with the world. The business world was not a part of the realm and this race of being the popular one wasn’t in picture. We used to simply enjoy being social media as it was something new, glamorous and captivating. We didn’t know much about how was social media 10 years back.

But now it’s a powerful tool. The business world has taken over and it’s all about marketing today. You can reach masses with one single click. You can become a trend with just one great post. You can discover a small business and help it prosper because every discovery can be life-changing. Your audience is out there and if your brand is what they want, they will shower you with likes, ROI’s, followers and a brand new image.
