I have seen this mistake made way too many times to not put it at the top of the list. People tend to get confused with the difference between the word “your” and the contraction “you’re”. It’s nothing to be embarrassed about, even Rachel Green made that mistake – “Y-O-U-R means YOUR, Y-O-U-’-R-E means YOU ARE” – remember?
Ross summed it up perfectly in that retaliation. “Your” is an adjective that shows possession. It can only come before a noun or a pronoun.
For example:
“I just took a stroll around your house.”
“You’re”, on the other hand, isn’t a single word. It’s a contraction, or a short form, for “you are”.
For example:
“You’re getting taller every day.”
When “you’re” is mistaken for “your” in a sentence, or vice versa, it is completely stripped of all meaning.
This is another example of a contraction being mistaken for an actual word. “It’s” is a contraction of “it is” or “it has”.
For example:
“It’s my favorite book” for “it is” or “It’s been a terrible day so far” for “it has”.
“Its” is a possessive pronoun. It’s meant to show that a certain thing belongs to whatever you’re talking about.
For example:
“Indonesia is a beautiful country and its people are extremely friendly.”
I made the mistake of mixing up these words for a few years when I was in school. It was not until a teacher corrected me that I realized where I went wrong. My teacher’s advice had a good effect on me, but afterward, I was affected that I had been using the words wrong my whole life. See what I did there?
Basically what I’m trying to say is that “effect” means “to make a difference”, and “effect” usually refers to a “consequence of an action”.
Therefore, if person A affects person B, person B feels the effect of person A’s actions.
These three words couldn’t be more different from each other, yet they’re often bundled together as one word.
“They’re” is a contraction for “they are”.
For example:
“They’re very late.”
“There” refers to a location.
For example:
“I need to get there fast.”
“Their” implies possession.
For example:
“Their services are the best in the industry.”
Last but not least, I’d like to touch upon the subject of two words that look similar but mean very different things.
“Stationary” refers to something that’s not moving.
For example:
“Their car was stationary when we passed by them.”
Stationery is a noun that groups together pens, pencils, staplers, and all other office supplies.
For example:
“I’m all out of stationery.”
