Digital Marketing for Beginners

Digital Marketing for Beginners

30th July, 2021

Digital marketing is a field that has been garnering a lot of buzz over the last few years. It can be safe to say that the rise of digital marketing came as the internet became more popular. The internet has become a necessity now, as opposed to the precious rarity that it was back in the glory days of traditional marketing. The widespread popularity of the internet gave way to the dawn of social media, which paved the path for digital marketing to establish itself.

Despite all the momentum it has gained, some people have only now started to recognize its existence. Perhaps you’re one of them, and you’re curious about what it is and eager to learn more about it. Or you have always known what it is and now want to get in on the action yourself. Either way, you have found yourself in the right place. Here I’ll be discussing all digital marketing, starting from the what right down to the how.

What is Digital Marketing?

In the most basic terms, digital marketing is any type of marketing that uses an electronic device. It is used to send potential customers promotional messages and to connect them with brands. It can be done through email, social media, online advertisements, and texts. Any marketing strategy that involves digital communication is digital marketing.

Types of Digital Marketing

Search Engine Optimization

This is more a tool used in digital marketing rather than a type. In an article by thebalancesmb.com, they described SEO as “the art and science of making web pages attractive to search engines.”It requires thorough research to weigh out factors that will bring it traffic from search engines.

Cracking the code for search engine optimization is a highly essential part of running a successful website. Even though it’s about making small changes to a website, the summative effect of the changes has a big impact on the site’s performance. They don’t, however, guarantee an instant spot in the highest ranks of a search engine. This is because the algorithms of search engines keep changing, and there already exists quite a lot of competition in this market.

The most important aspects of optimizing a website are content indexing, good link structure, keywords, and keyword targeting, and the number and accuracy of links provided within the website. These make sure that a search engine can properly read your site and look through its contents properly. In addition, they ensure that your site is given a higher rank on the search engines.

These aspects make up the “science” part of SEO, as they’re facts and straightforward. However, the unpredictability of whether these methods will work makes up the “art” part of SEO.

Pay –per- Click

We encounter these every day while surfing through the internet. One example of these is the ads that are found at the top and bottom of a webpage, which sometimes covers the entire page. They also include the ads before a Youtube video and those in phone applications.

Pay-per-click refers to paid online advertisements and search engine results. This is not a long–term form of digital marketing, as the ad disappears once you stop paying. The cost for the ad varies and businesses receive money only when people click on the ad. It comes in handy, however, in that this method leads to increased search traffic for an online business.

Social Media Marketing

This is one of the trendiest forms of digital marketing. It involves everything done by a business on social media that relates to marketing.

Most people are familiar with social media and use it for recreation, but marketers approach it from a strategic point of view. They coordinate everything in an orderly fashion. It is necessary for them to be consistent with their activities on social media, so some of them resort to automating and scheduling posts. It is also important for them to remain active despite the scheduling, lest people suspect that there is no real person behind the account.

Another duty of social media marketers is to analyze the performance of their posts and how much traffic they got. They also brainstorm new ideas to grab more attention to their social media profile. This can be done in many ways. Take Wendy’s restaurant for instance. It is in no way as popular as KFC or McDonald’s, but it constantly posts witty and snarky comments on Twitter which in turn draws people to the restaurant.

Content Marketing

This method uses storytelling and sharing of backstories to improve brand awareness in the form of blog posts, e-books, podcasts, and many others. It works on gaining a customer’s empathy and trust. At the end of the day, the aim of content marketing is to get the consumer of the content to take a step forward to becoming a customer. This can be done by the potential customers asking for more information about the brand, signing up for an email list, and making a purchase from the brand.

This form of marketing is all about building a long-term relationship with a customer, and not just for the course of a single purchase.

Email marketing

Despite the invention of various new means of communication on the internet, email still hasn’t gone out of style. People who market through emails create thought-provoking campaigns, and at the same time analyze customer interactions and data. This helps them strategize and act accordingly to their findings.

Email marketers make their emails more attractive to their recipients by creating a feeling of urgency and personalizing their emails. This establishes that the marketer truly cares about his/her customer and remembers their minute details.
